Description
This building is a barn located approximately 10 metres north of Talaton Farmhouse. It dates from the late 17th century to early 18th century and was reroofed in the 19th century. The barn is constructed of red brick in Flemish bond and has a slate roof, which was originally thatch. It is a double barn facing southeast and features two pairs of full-height double doors that open onto two threshing floors. The doorways are flanked by short projecting midstrey walls, and above the eaves, these walls extend down a short distance to form canopies. Between the doorways and at each end of the barn are slightly recessed bays, each containing hayloft loading hatches. The roof is gable-ended. Inside, the barn is open to the roof, which is supported by a series of 19th-century king post trusses. During the 19th century, the walls were raised slightly to accommodate the lower pitch of the slate roof. This barn is an attractive example from the late 17th to early 18th century and represents an early use of brick in rural Devon.
