Description

The premises of Matthews Ltd is an 18th-century painted brick corner building located on Lyme Street in Axminster. It features a steeply pitched corrugated iron roof with stone-coped gable ends and a hipped corner. The building has a moulded eaves cornice and stands two storeys tall. Both the Lyme Street and South Street elevations have a range of four windows, which are sash windows with glazing bars set in exposed casings, topped with flat brick arches that include keystones. Notably, there is a good early 19th-century corner shop with bowed windows that curve into a central doorway at the corner. On the Lyme Street side, the original central pilastered doorcase has been converted into a window.
