Description
The George Hotel is an early 18th century coaching inn located on an island site in Axminster. It is a large stone rubble building with a brick front facing Victoria Place. The hotel features a steeply pitched slate hipped roof with a modillion eaves cornice and has a distinctive bend at the floor levels. The structure consists of three storeys and six bays, with sash windows that have glazing bars set in exposed casings.
On the right side (south) of the building, there is a late 18th century assembly room addition, which has a hipped asbestos slate roof. This addition includes a carriageway on the ground floor and a large Venetian window above, framed by pilasters, an entablature, and a keyblock. A similar Venetian window is located at the rear of the building.
The rear of the main building features a range of sash windows, casements, and ground floor bays with sash windows. There is a panelled door leading to Chard Street, which is topped by a rectangular fanlight.
Inside the assembly room, there is a plaster cornice and a frieze decorated with swags. Each end of the room has a Venetian window set in elliptically arched openings. The chimneypiece is adorned with fluted Ionic three-quarter columns and a decorated frieze, and there is a small gallery with a bowed balustrade. In the main range of the hotel, there is an 18th century dog-leg staircase featuring twined balusters.
