Description
This is a lamp post located approximately 1 metre west of the outer lych gate of the churchyard of the Church of St Mary in Rockbeare. It was dated 1908 and is made of cast iron with a brass plaque. The lamp post is ornate and unusual, featuring a circular stem that is twisted above bands of incised shapes, separated by rings of knobbed decoration. At the top of the stem, there is an acanthus leaf motif between ornate arms of scrolled foliage that extend into splayed wings. Above these arms, formalized leaf forms support an electric box, topped by a bulbous glass lamp holder. A brass plaque at the bottom is inscribed with Victorian Gothic lettering, commemorating the gift of the lamp post in memory of Robert and Emma Gibbings by their children in 1908.
