Description

A detached cottage dating from the late 17th century, located on Stockton High Street. The cottage is built of rendered cob and timber frame with a half-hipped thatched roof, featuring a brick stack to the left of centre. The gable end faces the road, having a baffle entry. It is a single-storey building with an attic, presenting a single-window facade to the east. A lean-to timber porch is located to the left, with a planked door and a two-light leaded casement window to the right. An eyebrow dormer window with a two-light casement is visible in the attic. The left return has a gable end to the road, displaying two two-light ground floor casements and one two-light first floor casement. The rear of the cottage includes three two-light casements on the ground floor and a two-light casement in the eyebrow dormer; a stone projection serving as a bread oven is situated to the right. The right return features a lean-to addition and a two-light attic casement. Inside, the cottage features an open fireplace with a chamfered lintel on chamfered stone jambs, alongside a chamfered beam with jewel stops. The first floor contains a blocked stone Tudor-arched fireplace. A winding staircase and planked doors are also present. Originally a single-cell timber-framed cottage, it was later extended in the 18th century with cob additions at both ends.
