Description
No 40 is a detached cottage located on High Street, built around 1860. The building features a stucco exterior and a single-Roman tiled roof with brick stacks. It is two stories high and has three windows. The entrance is a planked door with a gabled canopy that has cusped barge boards, positioned to the right of center. To the right of the door is a two-light steel casement window with hexagonal leading, and to the left is a canted bay with similar casements. The attic has a large gable to the left of center, which includes a three-light casement, and smaller gables on either side with two-light casements, all featuring cusped barge boards. There is a lean-to garage attached to the right side of the cottage. The left side has a single-light steel and leaded casement window on the ground floor, while the rear has wooden casements from the 20th century. This cottage is a good example of a late 19th-century estate cottage in the village and was restored in the 1970s with steel casements that match the original design.
