Description

Manor Farmhouse is a farmhouse dating back to the early 17th century, largely rebuilt around 1700, with a mid-19th century extension and alterations and extensions in the 1960s. The building stands on the site of a 16th-century house. It is constructed of dressed limestone with a tiled or Welsh slate roof, featuring 20th-century diagonally-set brick stacks. The main range has a layout in the shape of an "L."

The north-west front is two storeys high with three windows. A two-story stone porch, built in 1968, is set across the angle between the east range and a 19th-century west wing. A twin-gabled wing from the 1960s is to the right, featuring sash windows and a 6-panelled door. The original range from around 1700 has a three-light ovolo-mullioned casement window on the ground and first floors on the west side, with a string course. A blocked mullioned casement is on the first floor. The north side of this range features two three-light ovolo-mullioned casements to the ground and first floors, also with a string course. There are two-light mullioned casements with hoodmoulds in each of the two attic gables. A lead rainwater head bearing the initials "C M" and the date 1618 has been moved from the front of the building to the north side in the 1960s; it is believed to be from a Christopher Poticary. The garden front, or left return, has a central glazed door with an elliptical-arched head and three-light mullioned casements on either side, set within a continuously moulded lintel string course. The first floor has three three-light mullioned casements with a string course above. The rear of this range has a central external stack and three-light mullioned casements either side. French windows are on the left, along with a single-light window and two three-light mullioned casements on the first floor. Two-light mullioned casements with hoodmoulds are in the two attic gables. The roof has saddleback coped verges with finials. Adjoining the left side is a mid-19th century range with ovolo-mullioned casements and a slate roof. A 1960s extension, constructed using stone from the demolished Tisbury workhouse, is attached to the left.

Inside, the north-east drawing room contains a stone fireplace surround with moulded strapwork frieze and cornice, a 6-panelled door with moulded architrave and paterae, and window shutters. A 19th-century open-well staircase has stick balusters and a continuous handrail. The south drawing room has a moulded Tudor-arched stone fireplace surround, strapwork frieze, and cornice. An attic mullioned casement on the north side has the date 1684 scratched into the jamb. An outhouse attached to the right of the front has a rendered front on a brick plinth and banded limestone on the south side, likely dating back to the 17th century. The house’s 1960s alterations and the mid-19th century modifications partially obscure the original plan. It is believed the house was built by Jerome Poticary, who died in 1596.
