Description

Topps is a detached house located on Stockton High Street, dating from the mid-17th century, with alterations made in the early 18th century and early 19th century. The building was restored in 1966. It is constructed from coursed rubble stone and English garden wall bond brick, topped with a thatched roof featuring coped verges and stone and brick stacks. The house has a gable end facing the road and is two stories high with a five-window east front.

To the left, there is an early 19th-century brick range that includes a half-glazed door with a flat wooden hood and a 2-light casement window. The first floor has 2-light and 3-light leaded casement windows. To the right is an early 18th-century dressed limestone range, which features 2-light, 3-light, and 4-light recessed chamfered mullioned casements on both the ground and first floors.

The right return, which also faces the road, has a stone ground floor and a brick first floor, along with a plaque commemorating the 1966 restoration and an attic light. The rear of the building includes a flat-roofed 20th-century porch and extension to the right, a 2-light leaded casement next to a stone and brick lateral stack, and a 2-light mullioned casement with a hoodmould to the left. The first floor has a 2-light mullioned casement to the left and 2-light and 3-light casements to the right. The interior was not accessible during the survey conducted in April 1987.
