Description

This is a row of four cottages located on Back Road, Calne. They were likely built in the late 18th century, around 1790 according to deeds relating to number 7. The cottages are constructed of roughly dressed limestone, with number 9 being rendered to the front. They have gabled pantile roofs and brick end and ridge stacks. Each cottage has a double-depth plan, featuring one room to the front and an integral rear outshut containing services. The cottages are two stories high and have a four-window front. The front doors are 20th-century replacements. The windows are largely late 19th and 20th-century casements, set in plain 2-light stone mullioned surrounds, with casements also to the rear. The interior of number 7 retains original joinery and an open fire to the right gable end. The row represents a substantially complete example of artisan housing from this period.
