Description
This is a row of four cottages located on the west side of Staley Road in Mossley. They were built in the early 19th century, with the date "JLB 1802" carved into the lintel of the door surround of number 77, and the remaining cottages added shortly afterwards. The cottages are constructed from hammer-dressed stone and have slate roofs.
The row is double-depth, with three storeys and three bays, plus an additional two bays of two storeys. Number 77, the left-hand cottage, has a central, square-cut door surround with the date carved into it. It has recessed stone mullion windows with three lights to the ground and first floors—the mullions have been removed from the ground-floor windows—and similar windows with four lights on the second floor. Number 75 features a 20th-century inserted door and windows with three and four lights on the first and second floors respectively. The roofs of the two cottages on the right side of the row step down. Stone quoins are visible, and the rear elevation has a small, flat-roofed extension dating to the 20th century, as well as matching window fenestration. There are three ridge chimney stacks.
