Description

Broughton House is a detached house dating from 1673, as indicated by the inscription on the datestone above the door. It is constructed from rubble stone and features a stone slate roof with stone stacks that have moulded cappings. The house is two storeys high with an attic and has five windows across the front. The central entrance consists of a ribbed door set within a wooden Tudor-arched surround, with an oval datestone featuring guilloche moulding above it, which may have been reset. On either side of the door are 3-light ovolo-mullioned casements. The first floor has 3-light ovolo-mullioned casements flanking a central 2-light window. There are two full gabled dormers, each with 2-light ovolo-mullioned casements and hoodmoulds.

In the late 18th century, two-storey bays were added to each side of the house, featuring 16-pane sash windows. To the right, there is a single-storey addition with 20th-century casements, and the gable end attics have 20th-century stone moulded casements. A 19th-century gabled wing is located to the left and includes mullioned casements. The rear of the main range is similar in style to the front. Although the interior was not accessible during the survey in December 1986, it is reported to have a moulded stone fireplace.
