Description
Nos 14 and 16 on High Street is a building that dates back to the 16th and 17th centuries, with some original timber framing still visible behind a brick front added in the 18th century. The three-storey façade was stuccoed in the early 19th century and features a band cornice and a parapet with coping. The upper floors have two windows with flat grooved arches and vermiculated keystones, and there are rusticated quoins at the corners. Modern shop fronts partially obscure the first-floor windows. To the right of No 14, there is a round arch passage entrance with block imposts and a keystone. Elements of the original timber frame can still be seen on the first floor and in the roof, which includes arched braces, tie beams, and collars, as well as slate-hung gables at the rear. An early 18th-century turned baluster staircase remains intact, connecting the first and second floors. Nos 2 to 16 (even) are recognized as a group.
