Description

Barclays Bank, located at 1 High Street, is a building dated 1874 and designed in the Italian Gothic style. It is situated on a corner site with Bridge Street. The structure is likely made of Ham stone and consists of three storeys. Notable features include a heavy dentil cornice, bands between the storeys, and a plinth. The building has a pilastered parapet and presents two bays to High Street, with a bevelled corner and ten bays to Bridge Street.

The ground and first floor windows are set within moulded arched recesses, featuring keystones and pilasters that rise from the plinth to the spring of the arches, adorned with foliate capitals. The pilasters are doubled at the bevelled corner. Each window on the first and second floors has two round-headed sash lights, separated by red sandstone colonettes with Ham stone bases and foliate capitals. The tympani of the first floor features carved roundels at the centre. The ground floor windows also consist of two lights with similar colonettes, but these are topped with stepped basket handle arches. The pilasters that divide the bays at ground floor level are banded.

The entrance is located at the bevelled corner, featuring double round-headed doors within a moulded surround, complete with a carved head keystone and foliate carved spandrels. Above the entrance, the first floor window has carved panels below the sill.

Nos 2 to 6 (even) form a group with Nos 3 to 7 (odd) on Bridge Street, and also group with Nos 2 to 14 (even).
