Description
HIGH STREET 1. 1594 (West Side) Nos 2 to 6 (even) (Barclays Bank) SU 1429 NW 3/389 II GV 2. Corner site with Bridge Street qv. Dated 1874. Italian Gothic style. Probabl. Ham stone. 3 storeys. Heavy dentil cornice, bands between storeys, plinth. Pilastered parapet. 2 bays to High Street, bevelled corner and 10 bays to Bridge Street. The ground and lst floor windows are set in moulded arched recesses with keystones divided by pilasters rising from plinth to spring of arches, with foliats capitals. The pilasters are doubled flanking bevelled corner. The 1st and 2nd floor windows each have 2 round headed sash lights with red sandstone colonettes dividing with Ham stone bases and foliate capital Carved roundels in centre of 1st floor tympani. Ground floor windows also 2 light with similar colonettes dividing but with stepped basket handle arches, On ground floor level the pilasters dividing bays are banded. Entrance on bevelled corner: double round headed doors in moulded surround with carved head keystone, foliate carved spandrels. The 1st floor window, over door, has carved panels below the sill.
Nos 2 to 6 (even) form a group with Nos 3 to 7 (odd) Bridge Street qv Also Nos 2 to 14 (even) form a group.
