Description

The County Hotel is located on Bridge Street and dates back to around 1880-90, with an eastern section added circa 1908. The building features a long, irregular ashlar front divided into two parts. The eastern section has a two-storey asymmetrical elevation with a main entrance in a slightly projecting gabled bay. To the right, there is a smaller stone-faced gable above a first-floor window. The first floor has five stone mullioned leaded casements, while the ground floor includes a plate glass shop window to the left (No 3) and a large moulded basket handle arch leading to the hotel entrance, which has a cantilevered hood. To the right of the entrance, there are a large four-light and a three-light casement, along with a door featuring a depressed arch and three small stone mullioned lights above, topped with a small stone pediment.

The western part of the hotel, which is the main section, is more elaborately designed in a Tudor-Jacobean style. It also has a two-storey asymmetrical elevation and a return front to the west. This section features a moulded string course between the storeys and a plinth, with a tiled gable end roof. Stone-faced gabled dormers with finials are positioned above the eaves, and the ashlar chimneys extend down into the first floor, supported by stepped corbels with moulded shafts and caps. The first floor has two and four-light stone mullioned windows with transoms and octagonal leaded panes. The ground floor showcases large wood mullioned windows set in basket arches, with a door beneath an elaborate crocketed ogee arch. The return front displays similar irregular fenestration and features a slightly taller projecting bay on the first floor, which includes a large flattened oriel with seven lights, stone mullions, transoms, octagonal leaded panes, and a balustraded parapet. Below this is a four-centred arched entrance with carved spandrels and a drip mould.

The County Hotel, along with Barclays Bank and Nos 3 to 7, forms a group.
