Description
The Clock Tower, which includes part of the former County Jail, was built in 1892 and is designed in the Gothic style. It is constructed of ashlar stone and features decorative bands, a pointed niche, and two lancet windows in the upper section. The base is buttressed and has a niche on the street-facing side with an inscription. The clock faces are flanked by columns, and the tower is topped with a pierced parapet and a pyramid roof that has a weathervane. The rectangular ashlar base is a remnant of the County Jail, which dates back to 1631 and has undergone Georgian alterations. There are two small rectangular barred windows on the east side and a door that has been inserted into the street. On the west wall, there is a plaque with a shaped top featuring a relief carving of three leg irons with swagged chains.
