Description

The Old George Inn, located on the east side of High Street, dates back to 1594 and features elements from the 14th century and later. This three-storey building has paired gables at the front and an elaborately braced timber-framed elevation with plaster infilling, topped by an old tile roof. On the second floor, there are two five-light mullioned and transomed casement windows. The first floor showcases two irregular canted oriel windows, each with ten mullioned and transomed lights, hipped tiled pent roofs, and timber-framed aprons. The wall between the bays is adorned with intricate interlaced bracing. The ground floor has been recently opened up to provide access to the "Old George Mall," featuring one original post with a bracket that projects forward to support the overhang. Inside, the south room on the first floor displays early 17th-century plasterwork friezes on the beams and a carved wood overmantel. Extending to the east on the north side is an open hall that spans two storeys, featuring a 15th-century hammerbeam roof with arched braces to the collars. Heavy scissor bracing is visible on the second floor, along with lath-decorated wall plates and spandrels. There are also two rooms with tie beams and kingposts supported by four-way struts. Nos 11 to 17 (odd) form a group with this building.
