Description

The gate piers to Midway Manor were built in the late 19th century and are made of limestone ashlar. They feature shaped recessed panels and a moulded cornice at the top, which is capped with three shrapnel shells. The piers are flanked by curved walls that have swept coping. On the right-hand wall, there are relief-carved arms along with the motto "Ratio ultima regnum." An inscription on the back of the piers notes that the shrapnel shell was invented by General Shrapnel in 1785. The family constructed a house at this location in the late 19th century, but the house itself is not included in this listing.
