Description

WEST LAVINGTON HIGH STREET, West Lavington ST 95 SE (west side) 5/303 Dauntsey's School II Main block of public school. 1898, by C.E. Ponting. Red brick with vitrified brick panels to upper floors, tiled roofs. Main school facing east, symmetrical with central tower over entrance, and six bay wings ending in five bay terminal pavilions. Central panelled door with radial spokes to arched top. Stone voussoirs and pilasters, and flanking mullioned and transomed windows. Crest over. Tower of 2 upper stages with shaped parapet. Tile hung turret supporting arched bellcote and windvane. Flanking bays have paired paned timber casement windows, the second and fifth bays raised as hipped dormers above eaves. Left end pavilion has central arched entrance and two flat roofed dormers. Interior: hall tiled. Two arches with crowned bust in cartouche in spandrel. Rear stair hall has iron balustrade to flying stair, 2 storeys high and roof light.
