Description

Dauntsey's School is the main block of a public school built in 1898 by C.E. Ponting. The building features red brick with vitrified brick panels on the upper floors and has tiled roofs. The main school faces east and is symmetrical, with a central tower above the entrance and six bay wings that end in five bay terminal pavilions. The entrance has a central panelled door with radial spokes leading to an arched top, flanked by stone voussoirs and pilasters, along with mullioned and transomed windows. Above the entrance is a crest. The tower has two upper stages and a shaped parapet, with a tile-hung turret that supports an arched bellcote and windvane. The flanking bays contain paired paned timber casement windows, with the second and fifth bays raised as hipped dormers above the eaves. The left end pavilion features a central arched entrance and two flat-roofed dormers. Inside, the hall is tiled and has two arches with crowned busts in cartouches in the spandrels. The rear stair hall includes an iron balustrade for a flying stair that is two storeys high and has a roof light.
