Description

Ballards is a detached house located on Bury Lane in Bratton, dating from the late 18th century. It is constructed of Flemish bond brick with a tiled roof that has a hip to the left and a coped verge to the right, along with brick stacks. The building features two parallel ranges and has two storeys plus a mezzanine floor, with three windows on the front facade.

The central entrance consists of a 9-panelled door set in round-arched reveals, topped with a fanlight and an open pediment. To the right of the door are a pair of 12-pane sash windows, while to the left are a pair of 9-pane sash windows. A toothed brick plat band runs above the ground floor. The mezzanine floor on the left side has a pair of 9-pane sash windows. The first floor features a toothed brick plat band, with a pair of 9-pane sashes on the left, a 12-pane sash in the center, and a pair of 12-pane sashes on the right.

The right side of the house has two French windows on the ground floor and three 12-pane sashes on the first floor. The left side has a 20th-century garage added on the left and an attached greenhouse on the right, along with a 16-pane sash window, a blocked window, and 20th-century casements on the first floor. The interior was not accessible during the survey in May 1986. The house was likely built for the Ballard family and represents a rebuilding of an earlier structure.
