Description

Grange Farmhouse is a farmhouse dating from the 17th century, with alterations made in the mid-18th century. It features a Flemish bond brick rebuilding of a timber-framed house, topped with a tiled roof that has a hip to the left and brick stacks. The building is two stories high with a main range that has five windows. The central entrance consists of a 9-panelled door with an integral transom light, framed by a roll-moulded surround and topped with a flat stone hood supported by brackets. On either side of the door are two 12-pane sash windows set in beaded architraves. Above, the first floor has five B sash windows in beaded architraves, and there is a datestone displaying the initials I A and the year 1739.

To the right of the main house is a range that retains some 17th-century brickwork opposite the stack, featuring two 12-pane sashes on the ground floor and one sash on the first floor, along with a 2-brick plat band with projecting headers on the lower course. The right return has 2-light casements, while the left return has a sash window on the ground floor. The rear of the farmhouse includes two blocked 2-light cyma-mullioned windows to the right, and the central bay retains square-panelled timber-framing with straight bracing and a 3-light steel casement. There is also a late 18th-century lean-to extension on the left side, which is two stories high and has a planked door and casements. The interior was not accessible during the survey in May 1986, but it is said to contain 18th-century fittings. The initials on the datestone belong to John Aldridge Ballard, who is noted for rebuilding the house.
