Description
Nos 81 and 82 on The Ridge are two semi-detached cottages dating from around 1700 and the 19th century. They are constructed of limestone ashlar with a tiled roof and brick stacks, forming an L-plan with the gable end facing the road. The cottages are two stories high and have a two-window front on the north side. The entrance features a planked door set in a stone-chamfered case, with a 1-light chamfered window to the right. To the left, there are a 2-light and a 3-light recessed chamfered mullioned window, both with hoodmoulds. On the first floor, there are a 3-light and a 2-light chamfered mullioned window. The gable ends have coped verges, and the right return faces the road, featuring a 20th-century mullioned window with a hoodmould on the ground floor and a 1-light chamfered window above. At the rear, there is a planked door in a chamfered stone case with a gabled 19th-century porch, along with 20th-century 2-light and 1-light chamfered mullioned windows. The rear wing includes one 2-light mullioned window on both the ground and first floors, and the gable of the wing has 2-light mullioned windows with hoodmoulds and a reset datestone marked IM/1655. The interior has not been inspected. These cottages were originally part of the Fonthill Estate.
