TISBURY COURT STREET ST 92 NE (north side)

5/210 Inner Gatehouse at Place Farm 6.1.66 GV I

Inner gatehouse, attached to south end of farmhouse (q.v.). Late C15. Dressed limestone, tiled roof with coped verges and brick stack to east gable. Two-storey, 2-window. South side has double cyma moulded Tudor-arched entrance with heavy planked door with strap hinges, diagonal buttress to right and buttress with offset to left, first floor has 2-light C15 window with arched lights. Left return has external dog-leg stone stairs to planked door of upper room, rising from pointed arch with hoodmould within through entry. Rear has double chamfered archway to entry with 2- light C15 window with arched lights to upper room, attached to farmhouse at left side. Interior of entry has heavy chamfered beams with stepped stops, pointed chamfered doorway with planked door to ground floor to east of entry. Interior of upper room said to have C19 fireplace surround and grate. Fine inner gatehouse at the former grange of the Abbess of Shaftesbury.
