Description

The Inner Gatehouse at Place Farm is a Grade I listed building dating from the late 15th century. It is constructed of dressed limestone and features a tiled roof with coped verges and a brick stack on the east gable. The gatehouse is two stories high and has two windows.

On the south side, there is a double cyma moulded Tudor-arched entrance with a heavy planked door that has strap hinges. To the right of the entrance is a diagonal buttress, and to the left is a buttress with an offset. The first floor includes a 2-light 15th-century window with arched lights.

The left side has external dog-leg stone stairs leading to the planked door of the upper room, which rises from a pointed arch with a hoodmould within the entry. The rear features a double chamfered archway leading to the entry, along with a 2-light 15th-century window with arched lights for the upper room, which is attached to the farmhouse on the left side.

Inside the entry, there are heavy chamfered beams with stepped stops, and a pointed chamfered doorway with a planked door to the ground floor located to the east of the entry. The interior of the upper room is said to have a 19th-century fireplace surround and grate. This gatehouse is a fine example of the former grange of the Abbess of Shaftesbury.
