Description
The farm buildings at Place Farm, dating from the mid-19th century, were constructed for the Fonthill Estates. They form a group that encloses a yard on three sides. The buildings are made of dressed limestone and feature a tiled roof with ceramic ridge vents.
On the north side of the group is a detached stable, which is now used as a calf shed. This single-storey structure has a loft and includes three planked stable doors and seven shuttered windows on the south side, with two gabled loft doors above. The gable ends feature planked loft doors, and the west gable has planked ground floor doors. Attached to the rear of the stable is a range of open-fronted implement sheds.
The yard to the south of the stable is bordered on the west and north sides by single-storey ranges of cowsheds and open-fronted shelter sheds to the south. The doors of these buildings are planked with strap hinges, and they have shuttered windows, while the outer-facing walls are windowless. This complex is part of the 19th-century improvements made to the Fonthill Estate.
