Description
This is an early 18th-century house situated on a corner plot in the Market Place. The building is constructed of painted brick with painted freestone dressings, a modillioned eaves cornice, and a hipped slate roof featuring a brick stack to the rear of the main block and a square brick stack to the rear of the right wing. It has an L-shaped plan. The exterior is three storeys high and displays a three-window range on both facades. There are raised surrounds to the upper floor windows, a thick sill band to the second floor, and 3/3-pane sash windows on the second floor. The first floor has cross-windows, with some blocked on the west facade. Modern shop windows and a doorway occupy the ground floor. The interior includes an early 18th-century open-well staircase with a close-spaced turned balustrade, a moulded swept handrail, and a dado rail. A small room on the first floor of the rear wing contains early 18th-century full-height raised and fielded panelling, a box cornice, and a cyma-moulded surround to a blocked fireplace. Steps lead down to an area reflecting a former road level.
