Description
This is an early 18th-century building located on the east side of North Bar Within in Beverley. It is two storeys and has an attic, constructed of brick and faced with scored stucco. The first floor features sash windows with exposed frames, originally without glazing bars. These windows have segmental heads with keystones. The ground floor has a door with eight fielded panels and a simple fanlight within its frame. The entrance is similarly framed with a segmental head and keystone, accompanied by 18th-century wrought iron guard rails and scrapers. A modern shop front and one with a wooden case are also present. The building is topped with a parapet featuring moulded stone coping and a slate roof punctuated by three segmental-headed dormers. A side elevation showcases a brick double gable with tumbled brickwork and a pantile roof. The windows are generally sliding sashes.
The staircase, dating to the mid-18th century, features an open string, slender turned balusters, columnar newels, and moulded handrails. Four rooms on the first floor contain diagonal chimneypieces; one of these has two fielded panels above the fireplace. Fielded panelled dados are found in the front rooms, on the landing, and in other areas of the building. Windows incorporate panelled window seats and shutters. Most doors consist of two fielded panels and retain their contemporary hinges. A peat-burning fireplace is located on the ground floor.
