Description
23 and 24 Market Place are two houses located on a corner site in Chippenham, dating from the mid-19th century. The east facade is constructed of limestone ashlar, while the north facade has been mostly rebuilt and rendered. The building features a slate roof that is hipped at the corner and has brick stacks on the left gable end. The plan is L-shaped with a plain canted corner.
The exterior consists of three storeys, with a five-window range on the east side and a three-window range on the north side. The windows are late 19th-century horned plate-glass sash windows. No. 24, on the left, has a two-window range with a plinth, a platband above the ground floor, and a semicircular arched doorway that features roll edge moulding and a radial fanlight to the right, with one window to the left. No. 23 has been converted into a double-fronted 20th-century shop.
Historically, maps from 1784 and 1835 indicate that this site was previously the Lamb Public House.
