Description

The Chapel, which serves as the offices of Samuel Salter and Company Limited, was built in 1823. It features a two-storey entrance front facing the road, constructed from ashlar stone with a rusticated treatment on the ground floor. The building has angle piers, a string course at the first-floor level, and moulded coping. There is a central pedimented break, with three arched windows on the first floor, the central one being larger and set back. The ground floor has two similar windows, all of which have glazing bars. The entrance is marked by a central double door with eight panels, a plain arched fanlight above, and a wide doorcase supported by engaged Doric columns and an entablature that includes a triglyph and rosette frieze. A shaped panel inscribed in raised letters reads "Samuel Salter and Co. Ltd. Estd, 1769". Originally, this building was the Bethesda Baptist Chapel, which has three bays in length and a two-bay lower extension at the north end. The listed mills in Court Street form an industrial group that includes Home Mill Buildings, Castle Factory, and The Chapel.
