Description

This is a terrace of three houses located on Langley Road in Chippenham, dating to the early to mid-19th century, with later 19th-century alterations, particularly to number 30 on the right. The front facade is constructed of limestone ashlar, with squared and coursed returns, and a rendered rear. The roofs are double-pitched and slate-covered, featuring moulded ashlar stacks and coped gable ends.

The houses have double-depth plans and are arranged over two storeys with attics, presenting a seven-window front. Architectural detailing includes a dentilled cornice, parapet, and platband. Number 26, on the left, has a 2-window front with a 20th-century 4-light flat-roofed dormer, 6/6-pane sash windows, and a 6-panel door with glazed upper panels and a cast-iron knocker. Number 28, in the center, is symmetrical with a 3-window front and features two small, early 19th-century gabled dormers. Number 30, on the right, has a 2-window front with a large, late 19th-century gabled dormer above a full-height, late 19th-century canted bay. The windows are plate-glass sashes.

The interior of number 28 retains early 19th-century panelled shutters, a roll-moulding to projecting corners, stick balusters and turned newels to a dogleg staircase, and a late 19th-century fireplace in one ground floor room. Another room has a plain stone surround to a former range, and a third has late 19th-century decorative panels painted onto the plaster.

The property is surrounded by roughly-built limestone walls that extend forward to the street, originally with a low plinth for former railings. Number 30 has piers with pyramidal caps flanking the garden, along with a 20th-century gate.
