Description

A group of Cannings headstones and four unidentified monuments is located in the churchyard, four meters west of the west tower of the Church of St. Peter in Milton Lilbourne. This group consists of four chest tombs and one headstone, all dating from the 18th century and made of limestone.

From north to south, the first chest tomb features a moulded table and base, with fielded panels and carved foliage on the sides and ends, though the inscription is not legible. The second chest tomb is similar to the first. The third chest tomb also resembles the previous ones, with panelled ends that include scrollwork. The fourth chest tomb is similar to the third.

Immediately to the south is a headstone dedicated to Alexander Cannings, who died in 1744, featuring a winged angel in a gable design.
