Description

This listing describes a group of three chest tombs and three headstones made of limestone, located 5 to 10 meters southeast of the south porch of the Church of St. Peter and St. Paul.

The chest tombs include: 1) a late 17th-century tomb, dated 16?6, featuring moulded panels and pilasters on the longer sides, a coved cornice lid with a moulded string and guttae over the pilasters, and a coved top; 2) a tomb dedicated to Thomas ? of Filkins from 1811, which has later inscriptions for Robert Burdock from 1851 and John Burdock, with plain slab sides and an ovolo-moulded cornice lid; and 3) a tomb for the Purbrick family, with inscriptions for Elizabeth (1795), Sarah (1796), Robert (1800), William (1828), and Mary (1849). This chest has a moulded base, a cornice lid and top, and oval inscription panels featuring shallow relief carvings of cherub heads and wheat ears in the spandrels, with pilaster strips on the long sides adorned with carved foliage festoons.

Flanking the south end of the Purbrick tomb are two headstones: one for Anne Purbrick from 1689, which has a shaped and moulded inscription panel that rises to a carved cherub head flanked by feathered scrolls, and another for John Burdock from 1685, which features a carved top with a winged cherub head. Additionally, there is another late 17th-century headstone with an illegible inscription for Elizabeth ?, located adjacent to the northeast end of the second chest tomb, which also has feathered scrolls flanking a carved cherub head.
