Description
Broadwell House is a house that likely has its origins in the 17th century for the south wing, while the west wing dates from the 18th century or early 19th century. The building has been extensively restored and extended around 1910 and later in the 20th century. It is constructed of coursed rubble limestone with dressed quoins and an ashlar front facing south, topped with stone slate roofs featuring coped gables and both ashlar and rubble chimneys. The older sections of the house form an L-shape and consist of two storeys and an attic.
The front of the house, which is from the 18th or early 19th century, has three bays on the first floor featuring 4-pane sash windows set in dressed stone surrounds with flat stone lintels and keyblocks. On the ground floor to the left, there is a tripartite sash window in a similar surround, while to the right are two 20th-century leaded casements. The left bays include 20th-century hipped roof dormers with 2-light leaded casements. The central entrance features 20th-century double doors in a chamfered stone surround with a keyblock and a wide stone pediment hood supported by brackets.
A gabled extension from around 1910 projects to the right, and there are later 20th-century extensions at the rear of the 18th-century wing. The south front showcases stone mullion and transom windows with Tudor hoodmoulds, which have either been completely restored or newly installed around 1910. The ground floor has three-light windows flanking the central door with leaded glazing, while the first floor has three 2-light windows, and the attic features 20th-century skylights. There is also a circa 1910 gabled bay to the left with a canted bay window.
