Description
Broadwell Manor is a house built in 1804 by Richard Pace of Lechlade for Mr. Larges, who was the agent to William Hervey of Bradwell Grove. The building features coursed rubble limestone, with the front squared and coursed, and some ashlar dressings. It has a hipped stone slate roof with rebuilt ashlar and concrete chimneys. The house has a square plan of 3 x 3 bays and includes later extensions at the north-west corner. It stands two storeys high with an attic.
The front elevation has a plinth, band courses, and chamfered quoins. The centre bay is slightly advanced and features a moulded cornice and a shaped pediment. The windows are 4-pane sash types with flat stone arches, and there are similar 20th-century sashes in large hipped dormers. A blind and painted lunette is present in the pediment. The central entrance consists of double glazed doors within a porch that has a tented lead roof. The porch is made of ornamental lattice work, which was originally wooden but was renewed in the 20th century in metal.
On the right side, facing the churchyard, there are three bays of 3-light wooden casements with Tudor hoodmoulds and arched glazing bars on the top lights. The upper left window is blind and painted. There is also a single-storey lean-to on the right with a 20th-century 4-light barred wooden casement. The house is illustrated and dated on Richard Pace's trade card, which is held at the Bodleian Library.
