Group Of 5 Monuments In The Churchyard, 5 To 7 Metres South And South East Of Chancel, Church Of St Mary

A group of five chest tombs is located in the churchyard, 5 to 7 meters south and southeast of the chancel of the Church of St Mary. These tombs date from the early to late 18th century and are made of limestone.

The first tomb, from the mid-18th century, features floral angle pilasters and raised and fielded panels on the south side that frame an inscription panel, topped with an egg-and-dart frieze. The north side had collapsed by the time of the last survey in May 1986. It has a moulded plinth and a cyma recta moulded cornice on the slab.

The second tomb, also from the mid-18th century, includes angle balusters and floral sprays that frame raised and fielded inscription panels on both the south and north sides. It has bead-and-reel moulding on the cornice and a cyma recta moulded slab with a gadrooned edge, though the slab shows signs of weather decay.

The third tomb, dating to the early 18th century, features floral sprays on the angle pilasters and large inscription panels on each side, adorned with swagged decoration that is badly decayed. The slab is deeply projecting and exhibits weather erosion.

The fourth tomb, from the mid-18th century, has angle and central pilasters that create two moulded inscription panels, each topped with a single patera. It also has a deeply projecting cyma recta moulded slab.

The fifth tomb, dating to the late 18th century, has end panels designed to simulate balusters, with two panels on each side: an oval panel on the south and a square panel with cut-away corners on the north. The slab is cyma recta moulded and shows slight weathering.
