Description
Howards House Hotel is a detached building that originally dates back to the early 17th century, with alterations made in the early 19th century. The structure is built of rubble stone and features a Welsh slate roof, along with ashlar stacks that have moulded cappings. It has an L-shaped plan, with the 17th-century gable end facing the road.
The hotel is three stories tall and has three windows across its front. To the left of the north wing, there is a depressed Tudor-arched doorway with a planked door, accompanied by a 3-light recessed chamfered mullioned window to the right and a 2-light window to the left. On the first floor, there is one 1-light window, two 2-light mullioned windows, and on the second floor, there are two 2-light hollow-chamfered mullioned windows. The 19th-century roof features Swiss-style deep eaves supported by curved wooden brackets.
To the left of the main building is a two-span roof range that includes the original 17th-century section with raised eaves, alongside a parallel 19th-century range to the north. This section contains two blocked 2-light hollow-chamfered mullioned windows with hoodmoulds and one 2-light window on the first floor. A tablet inscribed with "AHE /1623" is present, along with a visible straight joint and former roofline. The right return of this range features a 19th-century 4-light mullioned window with arched lights and hoodmoulds, as well as 3-light mullioned windows on the first and second floors.
The left return serves as the garden front, showcasing margin-pane French windows on both sides and a central 3-light ovolo-mullioned window. The first floor has two 2-light and one 3-light hollow-chamfered mullioned windows, while the second floor features 2-light mullioned windows with pointed lights in gabled oriels, flanking a central 2-light casement with pointed lights. The deep eaves are consistent with the front.
On the right return, there is a 19th-century door located to the right within a lean-to porch. The rear of the building has 2-light mullioned windows on the 17th-century range to the right, while the north range includes a depressed Tudor-arched doorway with a 2-light round-arched mullioned window to the right and three mullioned windows to the left. Various mullioned windows and one cusped pointed light, along with a 12-pane sash, can be found on the first and second floors. Attached to the rear is a single-storey stable and outhouse range featuring planked doors and a slate roof. The interior was not accessible during the survey.
