Description
This description covers a section of elevated pavement located in front of No 21 on Market Street, along with a wall to the left and steps leading north between No 21 and Nos 23 and 24. The pavement is situated midway up the hill on the right-hand side of Market Street, where the street widens to the east. The triangular section of elevated pavement stands approximately 3 feet above the modern road and is constructed of random rubble topped with paving stones.
To the left, there is a stone wall facing the street in front of No 20, made of rubble blocks with stone cappings, rising between 5 to 10 feet in height. This wall features a large semi-circular arched recess, adorned with ashlar dressings, and includes a square-headed opening filled with a metalwork grille. Access to the elevated pavement is provided by a flight of five wide steps, which are now made of concrete, leading to a sloping path of inset coursed rubble blocks. This path continues north, with a few isolated steps, between No 21 on the left and Nos 23 and 24 on the right, passing through a passageway under the left side of No 23.
The elevated pavement and surrounding structures form a group with Nos 5 to 8 and the boundary wall at Priory Lodge, as well as Nos 10 to 35.
