Description
This listing describes a long section of raised pavement located from No. 8 Hayes Place to the entry to Magdalen Road, dating from around 1810. The pavement is made of sandstone and features iron railings. It is constructed with flagstones and has a flush curb, along with a series of twenty-two narrow 'throughstones' that project to a bull-nosed end, designed to support a simple rail on widely spaced uprights.
The retaining wall varies in height, reaching approximately 1.5 meters from the road surface and tapering down at each end. On the inner side of the pavement, closer to the north end, there is a wide flight of fourteen steps leading southwards to a pathway, flanked by ashlar walls that stop at square piers with cappings at both ends. Opposite this, on the outer edge of the pavement, there is a very narrow flight of five steps with a small landing that descends to the road.
This raised pavement is an important historical feature, as it is part of the original main route out of the city to the south. It continues at St Mary Magdalen's Chapel down to No. 86 Holloway.
