Description

House, now divided into two dwellings. The origins of the cottage date to the early 17th century, with alterations made subsequently. It is timber framed with wattle and daub infilling, with some brick and flint on the gable. The roof is thatched. The building is single-storey with an attic, originally comprising three bays, with the left-hand bay being narrower. A half bay constructed of cob and brick, incorporating a substantial chimney stack, was added to the right-hand end. The timber framing is arranged in three panels in height, featuring arched corner braces. Doors are located on the north side, set within thatched porches and having 20th-century board doors. 19th-century timber casement windows now occupy the openings, replacing earlier applied oriels. An original window remains in the left-hand bay, featuring diamond-set, square-section wood mullions. Two flush dormers are visible, with the one serving No. 4 being larger. The rear of the cottage shows timber framing largely replaced by brick at lower levels and incorporating straight bracing; doors and windows are late 20th century replacements. Inside, much of the original timber frame is exposed, with jowelled posts and stop-chamfered beams. A partition wall between the two dwellings is original and extends to the roof. The roof structure includes collared queen post trusses clasping square-section through purlins and some mid braces. In No. 4, there are chamfered joists, a chamfered timber bressummer to what was formerly a stone fireplace (removed in the mid-to-late 20th century), and check and scoop stops to the ceiling beams. Straight braces are visible on the ties and plates, and the posts are jowelled.
