Description

Handle House at Studley Mills is probably dated between 1843 and 1848. It was built on a segmental bridge over the River Biss. The building is constructed of brick with a pantiled roof. A distinctive feature is its heavily perforated brick wall panels, designed to allow for the free passage of air during teazle drying. The ground floor has three small windows, and the second floor has a large, multi-paned window. The eaves are raked. A later extension is attached to the south-east side.

Inside, a wooden floor extends through the arch of the bridge, facilitating the lowering of wool baskets. This building is believed to be the only surviving example of its type in Wiltshire.

Handle House forms a group with numbers 50 to 58 Stallard Street, an adjacent workshop at the rear of number 58, an entrance screen, the principal Factory, and other elements within Studley Mills.
