Description

No. 58 on Stallard Street is an early 19th-century building that has been somewhat reduced by a wartime bomb but has been patched up. It is two storeys high with an attic and constructed of brick. The building features chamfered stone quoins, a moulded stone cornice, and a brick parapet with moulded stone coping that ramps to the right. The roof is covered with stone tiles and has a gable at the rear chimney.

There are two dormers with heavily moulded pediment heads, one of which is segmental. The building has glazing bar sash windows, with six windows on the first floor, all having moulded stone cills and architraves. The ground floor has five similar windows, each with an additional pulvinated frieze and cornice. A six-panel door is located in the second bay from the left, set within a stone doorcase featuring engaged three-quarter columns with attenuated Ionic capitals, an entablature with a pulvinated frieze, a modillioned cornice, and a segmental pediment. The window above the door is four panes wide.

At the southeast end, there is a two-storey square bay with quadrants on the sides. Inside, there is a good contemporary staircase with panelled and reeded ends to the steps, plain rails, and a moulded handrail that sweeps in a wide curve with bottom steps. The hall doorcases have an architrave cornice on reeded console brackets, and the same contemporary plasterwork is present throughout.

Nos. 50 to 58, along with a workshop at the rear of No. 58 and the entrance screen to the principal Factory and Handle House at Studley Mills, form a group.
