Description

The Old Rectory is a detached house that was originally a rectory, dating from the late 17th century, with extensions and alterations made in the early 19th century. The building features a dressed limestone front and a brick wing in English garden wall bond, topped with a thatched roof that has gable end stone and brick stacks. It has a two-storey and attic structure with five windows. The central entrance is a half-glazed door that was originally a window, flanked by three 2-light recessed chamfered mullioned casements on the right and two on the left. Above, there is a moulded string course over the lintels, and the first floor has five mullioned casements, arranged with two on the left and three on the right. The roof includes three 20th-century attic dormers. The right side of the building features a large external stone stack with offsets. The main entrance is now located in the early 19th-century wing on the right side, which has a door with six fielded panels and a fanlight, along with a 12-pane tripartite sash window to the right and two 12-pane sashes on the first floor. The rear brick wings contain either sash or casement windows. The early 19th-century wing is likely attributed to J. Prangley of Warminster, built in 1826. Inside, the house has deeply chamfered compartmental ceiling beams and Tudor-arched stone fireplaces. The early 19th-century drawing room features a six-panelled door and a marble fireplace.
