Description
No. 17 Horse Road is a detached cottage, originally two separate units, dating from the 16th century. The structure features a combination of timber framing with brick nogging and limestone rubble, which includes base courses, a gable wall, and a right-side extension. It has a thatched roof and is designed as a three-bay cruck cottage with a cross-passage. The right end has been rebuilt in stone and includes winder stairs next to the fire openings.
The front of the cottage is a single storey with an attic, showcasing three 2-light wood casements and a 4-pane sash window on the ground floor, along with a 3-light and a 2-light wood casement in eyebrow dormers above. There is a brick stack on each gable. The entrance features a light gabled hood near the center, although the original door was likely located just to the right of this. The left gable displays a pair of crucks with a collar, tie-beam, and a heavy cross beam at a lower level, partially obscured by a later rubble outbuilding.
At the back, there is a lean-to with a sheet metal canopy extending across the full width, and two large buttresses are present at the eaves in the left bay. Inside, the cottage has blocked bressumer fireplaces at each end and winder stairs leading to each. There is a plank and muntin partition, and the second pair of crucks features a cambered collar but lacks a tie-beam, with one curved wind brace visible to the southeast. The building faces northwest and has undergone few changes in the 20th century.
