Description
The Gables is a detached house located 40 yards south of a bridge on the east side of the road in Corston, St Paul Malmesbury. It dates from the late 17th century and has undergone some alterations in the 20th century. The building is constructed of coursed rubble with stone dressings and features a gabled stone slate roof with end stacks, which have stone bases and brick caps.
The house is two stories high with an attic and has a west front with two gabled bays. The ground floor includes three-light ovolo-moulded mullions with hoodmoulds and small pane casements, while the first floor has two-light mullions and the attic features single lights with moulded surrounds. The central doorway has a late 20th-century 'Georgian' style six-panel door with a spoked fanlight.
Inside, there are two circular newel staircases in the ground floor rooms at the front, and the original through passage has been blocked by a later staircase.
