The Moot With Attached Kitchen

The Moot is a house with an attached kitchen range, dating from circa 1700, with the kitchen itself being early 18th century. It is constructed of Flemish bond brick with vitrified headers and limestone dressings, featuring a tiled hipped roof and brick stacks with moulded cappings. The building is five bays wide and five bays long, with an extension, and has two storeys with a basement and attic, containing five windows.

The basement level has two recessed, two-light chamfered mullioned windows either side of a set of eight stone steps leading to the central doorway. The central bay projects, featuring stone chamfered quoins and a modillioned pediment above the door. The door itself is of six fielded panels, set within an eared stone architrave with an open segmental pediment supported on consoles. The first floor has a twelve-pane sash window within a moulded stone architrave with an apron and moulded sill. Flanked on either side are two flush twelve-pane sash windows to both the ground and first floors, exhibiting thick glazing bars. A stone plat band runs along the first floor. The eaves have a coved cornice, and lead downpipes are present. Three hipped dormers project from the roof.

The right-hand return displays a four-light leaded casement window to the basement, and a single ovolo-moulded casement window. To the left of the ground and first floors are two blind windows, while to the right are three twelve-pane sash windows to both floors, with a plat band marking the first floor. Three hipped dormers are present. The left-hand return includes a 20th-century door to the right of centre, accompanied by a large segmental porch supported by pairs of Tuscan columns. Below this are two leaded casement windows in the basement, with a blind window on the right and two twelve-pane sash windows on both floors to the left, again marked by a plat band. A further twelve-pane sash window illuminates the staircase above the doorway. To the left is an 18th-century bay with eight-pane sash windows to both ground and first floors, a coved cornice, and three hipped dormers.

The rear elevation shows an external brick stack with blocked windows to the left, and a 1920s flat-roofed extension with a dated rainwater head and a sash window. To the right is the return of the kitchen range, with leaded casement windows. The attached kitchen range is a single storey, with five twelve-pane sash windows, all with thick glazing bars, a parapet with blind windows, and ramped brick coping. A gabled tiled roof covers the rear of the kitchen, with twelve-pane and sixteen-pane sash windows. A garage is attached to the rear, featuring a leaded casement window, a planked door, and a hipped dormer to the tiled roof.

Following a fire in 1923, Mr. Squarey reconstructed the interior, though the positions of the two staircases are likely original. The north staircase features vase-turned balusters, while the central staircase displays barley-sugar balusters and a closed string. A stone bolection-moulded fireplace remains in the basement.
