Description
This is a gate and gate piers dating from the 18th century, located on Downton Moot Lane. The structure features a wrought and cast-iron gate with an overthrow, an ornamental latch, and side panels. The gate is hung on square brick piers built in Flemish bond, which have moulded cappings but are missing their finials. The design is very similar to the gate at the front of The Moot. Originally, there were attached dwarf walls and barleysugar baluster railings, which were illustrated in Country Life and have since been removed. This entrance leads to what were once beautifully landscaped gardens on the site of a 12th-century motte and bailey.
