Description
The Warren is a house that has been converted into a hotel, located at the end of a row on Downton High Street. It features a 15th-century roof above a late 18th-century rebuilding. The exterior is constructed of Flemish bond brick with tiled roofs and brick stacks. The building has a 5-bay 15th-century roof, now designed as a 2-span roof, and is two stories high with six windows. A central 20th-century door, accessed by steps, is set in a moulded case with a flat wooden hood. On either side of the door are two plate-glass sash windows. The first floor has six plate-glass sash windows, all flush and framed in moulded architraves. The eaves are dentilled.
The right side of the building features a tile-hung front gable with 2-light casements, while the rear gable includes French windows and a 12-pane sash window. The rear has two-storey wings with plate-glass sash windows that have hoodmoulds. Inside, there is a 5-bay roof over two former open halls, each consisting of 2 bays and separated by one bay. The roof over the former western hall is notable for its moulded arch-braced collar truss and two tiers of chamfered purlins with curved wind braces. The roof over the former eastern hall is simpler, with a chamfered arch-braced collar truss but lacks wind bracing. The closed trusses feature wattle and daub panels, and there is no evidence of smoke-blackening; a 17th-century axial brick stack may have replaced a timber-framed chimney. Ceilings were added in the 16th century to the eastern hall. Most of the internal fittings date from the early 19th century, including a moulded ceiling cornice and panelled doors.
