Description

Avon House is a mid-18th century house located on the south side of Downton High Street. It is constructed of painted header bond brick with a tiled roof and features gable-end brick stacks. The building is symmetrical with two storeys and a five-window front. The central door has six fielded panels and a fanlight, set in an arched case with brick quoins and a keystone, accessed by stone steps with cast-iron railings. On either side of the door are two plate-glass sash windows with fluted keystones. The first floor has five plate-glass sash windows, with the central window in an eared brick surround topped by a cornice. A moulded brick cornice runs along the top of the building. There are three gabled dormers with 2-light casements.

At the rear, the ground floor has casements and a central door, while the first floor features a canted bay window to the left and two 4-pane sash windows, all within a late 18th-century outshut that has a twin hipped roof. Attached to the left of the rear is a two-storey service wing that includes a planked door and a 3-light casement. Inside, the house has an 18th-century newel staircase with turned balusters, ovolo and ogee moulded door architraves, and an eared wooden fireplace surround.
