Description
A group of six chest tombs from the 18th century is located to the east of the Church of All Saints in Grittleton Littleton Drew. The tombs are made of ashlar and are arranged in a line of five, with one additional tomb to the east.
From north to south, the first tomb is an unidentified mid-18th century memorial featuring a moulded base and a cornice that projects forward at the center. It has a raised circular plaque on the north side and fielded panelled strips on each side, with floral drops at the corners, and a raised square plaque on the south side. The second tomb is the Chapman memorial, also from the mid-18th century, which resembles the first with a raised circular plaque on the south side and a rectangular plaque on the north side, along with fielded panels and floral drops at the angles. It includes an inscription for R. Chapmen Jr, who died in 1754.
The third and fourth tombs are unidentified memorials from around 1700, featuring heavy moulded capstones and are partially sunk. The fifth tomb is another unidentified mid-18th century memorial with an oval plaque on the south side, flanked by foliate scrolls and fielded panelled angle piers. Finally, the sixth tomb, located to the east of the others, is an early 18th century unidentified memorial with a moulded base and a cornice that projects forward over the center and angle piers, featuring two oval plaques on each side with wreathed borders.
