Description

This is a former office block and warehouse, built in 1878 as part of Studley Mills by the local architect William Smith. The building is an example of Italianate architecture and is constructed of ashlar stone. It rises to four storeys and features prominent corner pilasters and horizontal bands separating each storey. The front has five bays facing Stallard Street, with four windows on the ground floor set within arched, heavily rusticated surrounds, and a small shopfront. The first and second floors have alternately paired arched windows and larger elliptical-headed windows, all with keystones and connected by decorative bands at the impost level. The top floor has single tripartite casement windows with raised cills. The roof is hipped and covered in slate, with decorative brackets supporting the eaves. The rear yard front has three bays, with similar detailing; the central bay is slightly projected and has paired windows on the first and second floors. The building forms a group with numbers 50 to 58 Stallard Street, a workshop at the rear of number 58, the principal factory, and the handle house at Studley Mills.
