Description

The Salutation Inn is a public house located in Castle Combe, dating from around 1800, although it has an earlier core. The building is constructed of cement rendered rubble stone and features a slate roof with coped gables and end wall stacks. It is two storeys high and has a three-window range. The first floor includes three 2-light unmoulded flush mullion windows. On the ground floor, there is a central moulded flush stone doorcase set within a 20th-century gabled porch, leading to a framed 2-panel 18th-century plank door. Flanking the door are two 2-light cyma-moulded recessed mullion windows with hoodmoulds. There is a similar window on the ground floor of the south end wall, which has a hoodmould, and another above it without a hoodmould. At the rear, there is a half-hexagonal stair tower with a slate roof and a 12-pane sash window. Attached to the north end are a one-and-a-half storey extension and a two-storey outbuilding, which are not of special interest. To the right of the porch, there is a mounting block. Inside, the inn features a fine 17th-century moulded Tudor-arched stone fireplace located in the southeast corner of the ground floor. The Salutation Inn was a turnpike inn at the former Gibraltar turnpike gate and was likely raised by a storey around 1800.
