Description
The George Hotel, located at 47 Fore Street, is a late 18th century front added to a late 16th century building. It is three storeys tall and constructed of Bath stone. The building features a string course at the first floor level and a small moulded cornice at the second floor level. At the top, there is a tall parapet with a moulded string and coping, which is interrupted by three later gabled segmental-headed casements on the second floor. The first floor has four windows without glazing bars, each under drip moulds. On the ground floor, there are two windows and a wide central entrance flanked by Doric pilasters and an entablature. To the right, there is a two-storey 19th century angular bay. The interior, which originally had an open court in the center, has been built in and significantly altered. The George Hotel is part of a group with Nos 37 to 44, No 38A, and Nos 46 to 48, and is associated with No 13 Church Walk. No 43 is noted for its local interest.
